There's something about shepherds. Before David became the leader of a nation, he was a leader of sheep. It was lowly herdsmen "abiding in the fields" who heard heaven's announcement of the Messiah's arrival. A shepherd has time to think and meditate on the words of God. And it's hard to develop a big ego, as a shepherd. The keeper-of-sheep Abel heads the list of those "approved by God" because of their faith. And he stands in stark contrast to his proud brother, Cain.
