While not one of the original twelve disciples, Barnabas was still referred to as an apostle. That word apostle means ""one who is sent."" We're told that Barnabas was sent by the Holy Spirit to a specific group of people for a specific work among them. He was one of only a few men referred to as an apostle of the Holy Spirit. His job assignment was different from the 12 apostles who had been disciples. Barnabas understood that and accepted the job readily.
